Shawl Quilt Along WEEK 1, March 25th

Welcome to our first week of the QAL!  Man, am I excited to see your palettes!

As mentioned previously, we're starting the quilt along with a great giveaway.

Congrats to Melanie from @abitofscrapstuff.  She's won a big bundle of Missouri Star rulers and templates!  Thanks Missouri Star!  Also, thanks to you for following along.  This QAL is full of amazing prizes, so keep those pictures coming of your progress, and perhaps you'll win next week's prize.

If you have signed up for the QAL, you are entered in the giveaway.  I'll require proof of purchase if you are drawn, just to ensure that the prize goes to one of us who intends to participate in the Quilt Along.)

I've randomly selected a winner and reached out to confirm proof of purchase and will announce the prize and winner here once I've heard back.

This week has a few fun things to look forward to:

1.  First off, it's Let us see your palette!  Show us your fabrics on IG, using #shawlquilt and tagging me @briarhilldesigns.

If your palette is still a work in progress, share it!  Lay out the fabrics you have as they would be placed in the chart, and appeal to the hive mind to work through it!  Together we can figure it out!  For this week and next we are only sewing with A, B, and AB, so if you still have some figuring out to do, you have time!

Here's mine!
This will be a quilt for my little guy!

2.  I've been able to gather some fantastic prizes from amazing sponsors!  For the rest of the QAL, to be entered for prizes, use #shawlquilt on Instagram or Facebook to share your week's work by midnight on Sunday, and Monday morning, I'll announce the winner.

These are all businesses I have warm feelings for and I'm really happy I get to brag them up during our Quilt Along.  Below, I'll link their IG accounts so you can see their creative contributions to crafting.

Caverly, the painterly half of Briar Hill, and also myself are sponsoring prizes for the QAL, that's why our brand is up there, too!

Sheri of Violet Quilts is once again offerring 25% off of batting and 10% off of longarm quilting services for all QAL Shawl quilts.  She has quilted more than half of my quilts, so she comes highly recommended.  If you would like to let her know you'll be bringing her your quilt, you can message her at any time during the QAL, and she'll put you on her list!

In an upcoming week, I'll share some Longarm quilting pantos that I think are a good fit for Shawl, and also some ideas for those of you who would like to free-motion quilt on your domestic machine.

3.  We're cutting and sewing half of our blocks this week!

Here are the quilt sizes and the number of blocks to make.

Crib 9
Throw 25
Queen 36

This week, we're cutting out fabric for our blocks, and sewing the strip sets (make sure you read the section on working with strip sets because there are lots of great tips there!) and we will also be sewing the first half of the blocks!  Share pics at the end of the week for a chance at the end of the week giveaway!

Keep in mind, April 22nd starts Easy Week, so as much as I'd love to motivate you to qualify for the PRIZES, no pressure!  Enjoy the ride!  Thanks to the magic of strip sets, these blocks come together so fast.

I highly recommend cutting and sewing all blocks before cutting and sewing sashing or cornerstones, so that's how I've laid out the weekly plan for the QAL. (Below)

To keep us full of plaidspiration, here are some plaids (that are making me dream of my next Shawl quilt, when I haven't even started cutting my present Shawl quilt).
Some of these plaids have more than four main colours, so we could choose our four favourite colours in the plaid and then find colours to match their interactions.

Here's what's coming up!

To all of you, I'm so glad you're joining us!  One of the best parts of a QAL is making new quilty associates and friends, so I hugely recommend following the #shawlquilt hashtag and commenting on other participants' posts.

See you there!
